EU wants TikTok to explain its new app TikTok Lite's impact on kids and mental health. They're giving TikTok 24 hours to provide a risk assessment. This happened because they're worried about how it might affect children and users' mental health. The person in charge of industries in the EU, Thierry Breton, made this decision under the Digital Services Act (DSA). This comes after he started looking into TikTok two months ago for possible rule-breaking.
A new law says companies must work harder to stop bad stuff on their apps. If they don't, they could be fined a lot of money. The EU wants TikTok to check if its new app is safe before letting people use it in all 27 countries. The person in charge of industries in the EU, Breton, compared the new app to 'light' cigarettes, asking if it's just as addictive and harmful. He posted about it on a social media platform.
The EU is concerned about a new feature called 'Task and Reward Lite' in TikTok Lite, an app for adults 18 and older. They're worried about how it might affect kid's and users' mental health. With this feature, users can earn points by doing things like watching videos, liking posts, following creators, or inviting friends to join TikTok.
Users can trade these points for rewards like Amazon vouchers, PayPal gift cards, or TikTok coins, which can be used to support creators. The EU wants TikTok to hand in a risk assessment for TikTok Lite within 24 hours and other info by April 26. Then, they'll check TikTok's response and decide what to do next. TikTok said they've been talking with the EU about this and will provide the requested info.
