Google's Gemini AI has been in the news recently because of its image-generation feature.
This feature has caused controversy because it produced historically inaccurate images, which offended some users.
For example, when asked for images of America's 'Founding Fathers,' it could show people of different ethnic backgrounds, such as black, Native American, or Asian, causing concern.
The CEO of Google DeepMind, Demis Hassabis, explained that the feature was taken offline for fixing, and they plan to bring it back soon.
The issue was that the AI model in Gemini was "overcompensating" in promoting image diversity.
The company's SVP, Prabhakar Raghavan, explained that two particular aspects of Gemini's text prompt guardrails were responsible for the creation of this week's inappropriate images.
First, our tuning to ensure that Gemini showed a range of people failed to account for cases that should clearly not show a range. Second, over time, the model became way more cautious than we intended and refused to answer certain prompts entirely — wrongly interpreting some very anonymous prompts as sensitive.
These two things led the model to overcompensate in some cases and be over-conservative in others, leading to images that were embarrassing and wrong.
In response, Google temporarily disabled Gemini's ability to generate images of people and will conduct extensive testing before restoring full access to the feature.
Despite criticism, Google is determined to resume the technology, showing its commitment to addressing the underlying issues while continuing to innovate.
Critics, including Elon Musk, have expressed concerns about Gemini's AI, he even suggested that Google might not take adequate action to address the problem.
However, with plans for extensive testing and improvements, Google is committed to rectifying the situation and regaining user trust.
It is a complex situation, but Google's decision to address the controversy head-on and work towards a solution demonstrates its commitment to responsible AI development.
By taking steps to address the issues and improve the technology, Google is showing that it values user feedback and is dedicated to creating fair and inclusive AI.
